School employees in California are now free to make their own decision about funding unions.

In June of 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Janus v. AFSCME, 585 US (2018), that public employees can no longer be required to pay union dues or fees as a condition of employment. The union must earn teachers' support. Nearly all local teachers’ unions are affiliated with one of the two major teacher unions in California – California Teachers Association or California Federation of Teachers. United Teachers of Los Angeles is affiliated with both. To learn more about how to exercise your constitutional rights, select the union designated for your workplace.
